The rare and important Diaries of Harold young, of the 40th Reinforcements, the troopship 'Tahiti' on which the Reinforcements travelled was known as the 'Ship of death', the Tahiti was the source of the first influenza (flu) virus exposure on New Zealand ers, the Tahiti was exposed to the virus when the ship stopped at Sierra Leone. Between there and the trip to England many members of the New Zealand Forces aboard died from the disease. Some committed suicide by throwing themselves overboard. Most of the men were hospitalised, the unique diaries detail the travel of the 40th Reinforcements, including the exposure of the men to the virus, as well as detailing the deaths and suicides of many of the men, they cover the period 1918-1919 and include young's training in New Zealand, embarkation and journey on Tahiti, period in England, and his return to New Zealand .
