Note single oversized himotoshi indicative of early work, (old damage to rear leg), 5.5 cm wide. Deer are associated with Kasuga shrine in Nara where they roam freely and are viewed as sacred animals, messengers of the gods. Note: the deer is also a familiar of Jurojin, God of Longevity and one of the Seven Gods of Good Luck
