An extraordinary pair of profusely carved 19th century Japanese Beds, probably made for export and exhibited at an international Art Fair during the Meiji period (1868-1912), the structures are elaborately carved with mythical creatures emerging from beds of iris, the end panels are carved with iris in deep relief, the back ground with pin punched texture, similar to silver working, the side rails are also deeply carved with flowing iris and leaves, the wood is coated with a rich chocolate brown lacquer. Type of wood is possibly lime or a fruit wood. Upholstered in fine quality fabric, the beds are 99 cmx198 cm, the top end is 1.25 cm, the bottom end is 92 cm
