[A school teacher, later Ma and Inspector of Schools, Joseph was the son of John Dew of Bath, a boy convict, seven years in Van Diemen's Land in the 1840s. Joseph's son was Sir Harold Dew, Professor of Surgery, University of Sydney. His unmarried daughter in her will left $3.6 million to the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research].
