Late 19th century Maori wooden God stick (tiki-Wananga), these peg like sticks were thrust into the ground in the front of a priest (tohunga) to serve as vehicles for the spirits of the gods, these god sticks were tools of the tohunga who bound them in cords or dressed them in feathers, they were not worshipped but were considered as the material vehicle of the god who spoke through the priests.
