Military despatch box made of silver pine, with a fall front door revealing six graduated drawers with recessed handles, four letter holes, brass recessed handles to the top, a reversible brass plate inset into the door, one side inscribed 'The General Head Quarters', the other 'The Governor/Auckland'. The box belonged to Lieutenant General George Dean Pitt. George Dean Pitt was the son of Major General Pitt, who arrived in New Zealand in 1847 with his wife, son George and five daughters
