An important sterling silver flask property of Alexander Maitland, ship owner, son of Sir Thomas Maitland, Governor of Ceylon. Engraved on the flask are details of a voyage from Glasgow to Auckland on the ship 'Argyleshire' under the command of Captain Tod. 'Glasgow For Auckland NZ/Sat. 2nd April 1870/ Gareloch Monday 4th/ Left Pilot Off Ireland, Wed. 6th/ Off the Cape of Goodhope. Table Bay 15th June/ 15th July Off South Cape Tasmania/ Friday 29th July 1870 at 6am N23A Sighted the Three Kings Auckland NZ/ Arrived in Auckland Harbour Tuesday Aftn August 2nd 1870.'
