Description:
Rare Solomon Islands War Shield, a rare and fine elliptically shaped fighting shield made of coiled pieces of cane bound with horizontal lashing. A loop handle of cane attached to the reverse side of the shield. Wicker fighting shields of this general type were once utilised in the New Georgia Islands, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal and Florida Islands. 19th century. Height 83.5 cm Width 26.6 cm.
