Village Challenge post, beautiful carved post with typical Sepik mythology, Atmel people. Such posts were planted on the outer boundaries of villages, facing opposing villages. Shows traces of paint. Very finely carved from a single inverted tree and buttress roots. A very rare piece, middle Sepik. 1950s or earlier. Height 200 cm. Width 68 cm.
