Medals, Letters and postcards of Cpl. S.C.S. Downard. This accumulation of documents includes his service file, an original late 1890's childhood diary, numerous covers, letters and cards sent by Samuel Downard back to wife and daughter in Karori, Wellington, there are also letters and tele grams sent to his widow after his death and a period photo of his grave, the letters from Downard are deeply personal and emotive. However, even more poignant is a letter to Mrs Downard from a medic (Cpl E.A. Andrews) who has removed from the body of Downard a locket bearing the images of Mrs Downard and her daughter, the locket is included in this unique collection. Cpl Andrews States that Cpl Downard died peacefully and that although shot through the head his face was not marred. Samuel Downard enlisted in the Wellington Infantry Regt on 8 May 1915. He embarked with the 7th Reinforcements. However, did not serve at Gallipoli although he was based in Egypt over Xmas 1915. As a Cpl he served in France where he was mortally wounded on 23 July 1916
