Along with other South African players, rice was excluded from international cricket for most of his career. Rice played world series cricket 1977-79, and captained South Africa's first 3 ODIs in 1991. He played for Nottinghamshire in the English County Championship in a side that also featured internationals Richard Hadlee and Derek Randall.
