A Folk Art Maori Taniwha and Tuatara Theme Friendship Box by Jane Brenkley, Signed, the surfaces carved with a number of tuatara and taniwha (paua shell inlay to the eyes), and leaves. With paint effects and stylised Maori decorative motifs with pokerwork details. The lid interior featuring a pokerwork landscape scene of a distant whare on a lakeshore. Pokerwork dedication: 'Alan from Ma Oct 7th 1964. Kind hearts are more than coronets. From quiet homes and small beginnings, out to the undiscovered ends, there's nothing worth the winning but laughter and the loving friends'. Signed Jane Brenkley. The box interior is lined with floral wrapping paper below the rim which has a message in pokerwork: 'With troubles at their fewest, with treasures at their best and friendships at their truest, may all your life be blessed'.
