An Australian blackwood and upholstered double ended sofa, Circa 1850, the horizontal back with carving to each end above swan necked arms with scroll carving raised on inverse tulip short, raised on turned feet with brass castors, 220 cm wide, 77 cm deep, 90 cm high. Provenance: Bona Vista, Avoca, Tasmania; Purchased at the contents sale of Bona Vista in 1921, the property being sold the same day, by local farmer Mr Vernon Ransom; Thence by descent to his daughter Ms Vera Ransom; Thence purchased in 2008 by the present owner. Notes: This sofa is believed to have been either commissioned or purchased by Simoen Lord Jnr (1810-1892) as furnishings for Bona Vista., Simoen Lord Snr (1771-1840) from Todmorden, Yorkshire was convicted of stealing cloth in 1790 and sentenced to the minimum term of seven years transportation. He arrived in Sydney Town in 1791 aboard the 'Atlantic' in the third fleet. Within a very short period of time of being emancipated he become a very wealthy merchant and auctioneer. Mixing with the elite of colonial society, being a regular at Government House functions and becoming a friend of Lachlan Macquarie. Eventually becoming a publican and magistrate and one of the wealthiest men within the colony.
