Description:
1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III two-door convertible. Engine no. TBAChassis no. Tba The Lincoln Motor Co of Detroit, Michigan has since 1922 been the prestige marque of Ford. The early Lincolns were very much in the mould of Cadillac. The cars were somewhat old fashioned and did not sell that well. When a hefty tax bill put the fledgling Lincoln into receivership, Henry Ford stepped in and saved the company. Ford was keen on Lincoln as it gave him luxury cars to complement his basic Model T. Under Ford control, Lincoln flourished, and in 1923 President Calvin Coolidge purchased a Lincoln since when it has been the chosen transport for US Presidents. The first Lincoln Continental was launched in 1939. A derivative of the famous Zephyr, the body was styled by E.T. 'Bob' Gregorie and received its appellation due to the distinctive European feature of an exposed spare wheel cover. The Continental name was revived in the mid 1950s. The Lincoln Continental Mark III of 1958 was amongst the largest of American post war cars featuring a 7 litre V8 engine, the overall length was nearly twenty feet and the unladen weight was 5450lbs! Unfortunately the timing was not good as the backlash against over large cars had just begun in the USa and the car was not a sales success.Just 3,048 2 door convertible, six passenger Lincoln Continentals were produced in 1958.We are informed that this car came to Australia in 1959 or soon after and was converted to right hand drive upon arrival. It is the same car in which Miss Australia 1961, Tania Verstak rode in her parade. The car which was professionally repainted in 2001 has been the current owner's since 1989. Last registered in 1990, the odometer shows 48,000 miles which is believed to be correct from new. The vehicle presents well, still retaining its original leather trim. Some remedial work is required to the hydraulic seals and to the hood bow. The hood has a small tear in need of repair. This lot is sold strictly as viewed.
