1970 Maserati Indy 4.2 Chassis no. AM115.512Engine no. AM115.512 The Maserati Indy was officially launched at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The Indy was named in commemoration of American, Wilbur Shaw's victories with the Maserati Tipo 8ctF at the historic speedway Indianapolis 500 races in 1939 and 1940.Production dates of the Indy were between 1969 and 1975 during which time 1,104 units of the two door, four seater coupe were built. With bodywork styled by Alfredo Vignale, the early cars came with 4.2 litre engines with an alternative 4.7 litre offered in 1970. By 1971 the standard engine was 4.9 litre. The V8, 4.2 litre car was capable of 250 kilometres per hour. A perfectly proportioned car, the pop-up headlights make the front end particularly sleek and elegant whilst the interior is roomy and light thanks to the large glass area. This 4.2 litre Maserati Indy was delivered new in Sicily in May 1970 in the striking and unusual colour combination of Light Blue with Crema trim, in which it is still found today. Coming from a deceased estate and now right hand drive, the car's present owner has recently completed a full engine rebuild (including new pistons), gear box rebuild, suspension, brakes, discs and diff overhaul. We are told the car drives very well but that it may require further 'adjustments' as the car 'settles' after its rebuild as may the new electrics throughout. The body is in fine condition throughout and after its bare metal repaint presents beautifully. It also has a new stainless steel exhaust system. The interior of the car remains in original condition with some slight cracking to the front bucket seat covering. The original dashboard and instrument panel has few marks and looks wonderful. The car comes new to the market after its lengthy recommission and with an extensive history file (with bills totaling over $70,000 for the rebuild alone) and a Maserati factory letter confirming specifications and delivery.
