Description:
1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce Coachwork by Pininfarina Chassis no. 101.18 390816Engine no. AR0053605335 Registration no. NO101expires 14/5/2010 Sporting elegant coachwork designed and built by Pininfarina, Alfa Romeo's 1.3-litre Giulietta Spider was a huge success and continued virtually unchanged in 1.6-litre Giulia 101-Series guise when the latter joined the Alfa line-up in 1962. Launched at the Monza Autodrome on 27th June that year, the Giulia range was the work of a design team headed by one of the greatest of Italian automobile engineers, Dr Orazio Satta Puliga, who had been responsible for all the post-war Alfa Romeos. A bonnet air scoop, necessary to clear the larger engine's taller block, readily identified the new model. The capacity increase boosted maximum power of Alfa's classic twin-cam four from 80 to 92bhp and the car's top speed to 109mph. Reliability was likewise enhanced and the larger engine was noticeably smoother and less fussy. A five-speed gearbox was standard on the Giulia 1600 Spider, which remained in production until replaced by the Duetto in 1966. Towards the end of production, in 1964, the up-rated Spider Veloce was introduced, which came with the Sprint Speciale's 129bhp (Sae) engine installed, making it the fastest of the mainstream production Giulias. Described by Cars Illustrated as 'probably one of the most delightful small sports cars which will ever be produced,' the Giulia Spider is certainly one of the most attractive Alfa Romeos of its day and remains highly regarded now, especially in its ultimate Veloce specification. One of approximately 1,089 built, this left-hand drive Spider Veloce is an original California car that has had only three owners from new. The car was acquired by the current vendor in California in 1999 and personally imported into Australia in 2001 (see title and vehicle history on file). Since the Alfa's arrival in Australia a restoration of the engine and running gear to original specification has been carried out using Oem parts sourced from Alfa in Milan. All records and receipts are included.Only 843-or-so miles have been covered since its purchase by the current owner and the car has been carefully garaged and regularly serviced. A late model, it has front disc brakes and the five-speed gearbox, which makes for a rewarding driving experience. The convertible top is in excellent working order. Described as in very good condition, the car is currently registered and comes with plates 'No 101'. Spares included in the sale include a complete seals kit and other parts including an additional side mirror, which was not installed as it is not to original specification.Concluding its test of a Giulia Spider in 1964, Cars Illustrated reckoned it excellent value for money and 'a car of immense personality, and one which fully lives up to Alfa traditions,' all of which remains every bit as true today.
