c.1936 Bentley 4¼ litre Sports Saloon by H.J. Mulliner Chassis no. B151GP Engine no. E6BDX Registration no. ASG5 (Nsw) expires 5/3/2010 A number of reasons have been given over the years for the demise of the original Bentley Company founded by W O Bentley, and its subsequent acquisition from the receivers in 1931 by Rolls Royce Ltd. The great financial slump in 1930 made it impossible to continue the production of Bentleys without a large injection of capital which was not forthcoming in the dark days of the early 1930s. However, the acquisition of the name and assets by Rolls-Royce Ltd ensured its survival, and when the new car was introduced in 1933 it was greeted with great acclaim. Based on Rolls Royce components, and in the lighter chassis, the new 31/2 litre Bentley, described as 'The Silent Sports Car', was a refined and lively car, with a top speed of 90 miles per hour. It was an immediate success, popular with both the wealthy and fashionable of the day, and many well-known racing drivers chose it as an everyday car, appreciated for its road behaviour and performance. It was fitted with coachwork by all the leading body-builders of the period, in Saloon and open form, and by 1936 had grown to 41/4 litres in part to compensate for the heavier coachwork being fitted. This example of the latter was given its guarantee on 1/12/36 to the order of the Scottish agents, J. Croall & Sons of Edinburgh, a copy of the build cards is available for inspection. It was the subject of a total restoration by Max Houston of the Vintage Motor Garage Nsw in 1999-2000 and the workmanship can only be described as world standard, reflected in the following awards:- Best Restoration - Federal Rally 2000 Best Bentley - Federal Rally 2000 Overall winner, Best Restoration and the Age and Authenticity Award in the N.S.W. Branch Concours in 2000 Best Derby Bentley and Masters Class Winner in the Federal Rally in 2001 and Best pre-war car in the 2002 Federal Rally. Finished in a very subtle two-tone Navy Blue with a cream leather interior, this Bentley has opening quarter-lights in the front doors, twin wind-tone horns, and the fuel filler is located in the boot, on the lid of which the spare wheel is mounted. The current owner purchased the vehicle through Bonhams and Goodman in 2005 since when he has taken this vehicle to the highest possible level. This wonderful Derby Bentley will be of great interest to the most fastidious buyer and represents an opportunity to acquire one of these motor cars for a fraction of the cost of restoration. Highly recommended.
