1974 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Chassis no. ARZ470894Engine no. 00512522816 A modern classic by Pininfarina, the simple-yet-elegant Spider bodywork premiered on the 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto would prove enduringly popular, lasting on into the 1990s. The Spider's mechanicals were essentially those of the Giulia saloon, comprising independent front suspension, coil-suspended live rear axle and four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes, while the engine was the Sprint Gtv's 1.6-litre, double-overhead-camshaft four. The Duetto was produced for just two years before being superseded by the 1.8-litre '1750' Spider Veloce, the latter lasting until the advent of the 132bhp 2000 model in 1970. Wind tunnel testing resulted in the 2000 and final 1750 models sporting a drag-reducing Kamm tail, while other improvements included bigger brakes and a limited-slip differential. Outstanding speed, acceleration and handling were all characteristics of this class-leading model, which nevertheless possessed a quite remarkable docility, even at high speeds. This Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider was purchased by the current vendor in 1988 and used as personal transportation for the following seven years. In 1995 the car underwent a total restoration, being stripped down with all panels and components removed and treated for any rust. The floor pans were replaced and only genuine Alfa parts used together with original badges. The engine and running gear were rebuilt by Montessori Motors' Lorrenzo Montessori, who had been in charge of the Alfa Romeo Australia service department for 30 years prior to setting up his own workshop specialising in early Alfas. On the mechanical work's conclusion, all the upholstery was re-trimmed in quality leather and the carpets replaced by Clifford Powell Auto Trimmers in Alexandria, one of Australia's leading motor trimmers. All glass including the windscreen, side windows and quarter lights were replaced by Ralph Moore Auto Glass in Mascot, a firm specialising in period replacements. A new soft-top was fitted in 2005. After restoration the Spider was stored and maintained at the Sydney Motor Museum in Ultimo where it was exhibited from 1997 to 2004 prior to the Museum's closure. During this period the car was taken out only occasionally for club meetings and the like, covering approximately 1500 - 3,000 miles. After the Motor Museum's closure, the car was stored privately and has never been driven in the rain.Recent work has included reconditioning the carburettors, brake boosters and rear brake callipers, all this work being carried out by an Alfa specialist at the Classic Speed Shop, Sydney. The car is currently fitted with the much sought-after Momo Vega wheels but also comes with its originals. It comes with a current blue slip to facilitate immediate registration in Nsw.
