1961 Hammond Twin Cockpit Speedboat Henry (Harry) Hammond built his first timber ski boat in 1945. During the war years Harry worked at Garden Island shipyards in Sydney Harbour and at the end of the hostilities turned to his passion of hand-crafting classic timber ski boats.Originally with his brother Jim (who later moved north to Ballina where he built fishing trawlers), Henry quickly established a considerable reputation as a fine builder of maple (and later, marine ply) ski boats. No records of exactly how many Hammond wooden boats were built, but is believed that between 1948 and 1969 approximately 150 (all about 16 or 17 foot long) were hand built at the workshop in Brookvale on Sydney's northern beach. There were no records kept either to whom the boats were sold to, nor were full-size plans used, but the hull lines were expertly drawn directly on the timber to be used.Hammond Craft were most often supplied without interiors or engines, these to be fitted later to the choice of the new owners. Henry Hammond died in 2007 aged 92.This fine clinker-built example was built in 1961 and professionally restored throughout in 2005 to be offered as a prize in a Resch's beer promotion, since when it has been unused. The 289 Ford 8 cylinder engine has been reconditioned as has the V-drive transmission. The lovely little boat is in outstanding condition with new varnish, paint, red upholstery and electrics, as originally built, apart from later date steering wheel which has been fitted. It comes with a correct and road-worthy modern trailer.
