John Baird, (1834 - 1894) (attributed) General Grant kerosene shale portait medallion titled verso 'Genl. Grant' 15.5 cm diameter the carving of cannel coal colloquially known in Australia as kerosene shale had its origins in Scotland where coal miners fashioned objects such as love tokens jewellery and chess pieces from the material.
