Tamati Waka Nene Table c.1990 This magnificent table displays strong New Zealand imagery including Ngapuhi Chief, Tamati Waka Nene, from a portrait originally created by Sam Stuart. The top is raised on a quadriform base made in a modified regency style. This extraordinarily table was created by New Zealand authority on colonial furniture, William Cottrell. Freshly returned from David Hordern's restoration studios in London in 1990 where he had worked on excellent English pieces and New Zealand pieces made by Anton Seuffert and his son William, Cottrell laboured to create a marquetry table of equal quality to those made by masters of 19th century European cabinetmaking. Satisfied, and unlikely to ever repeat this feat, William Cottrell established his own workshop, devoted himself to the topic of New Zealand colonial furniture, and eventually wrote his authoritative work, Furniture of the New Zealand Colonial Era. Height 78 cm Depth 70 cm In 2001 a Gentleman's Cabinet, made by William Seuffert c.1919 and utilizing the same imagery, came to the market for the first time.
