Christchurch Parquetry Dressing Table c.1890 This dressing table and the following wardrobe are exceptional late 19th C examples of New Zealand cabinetmaking skills, with the intensity of inlay of this nature almost unknown outside of these examples. Both pieces originated from Christchurch and are clearly from the same workshop. The use of the New Zealand themed Teutenberg handles accentuates the prolific use of New Zealand timbers. The design has naïve elements to it but this is more than compensated for by the rich use of timbers including the thick rimu veneers on the sides of each cabinet, and rewarewa, totara and rimu as dominant timbers. It is interesting to note that the kite pattern used by Jewell is also evident here. We do not know if they were privately commissioned or were intended for an exhibition but it is almost certain that these were made as one-off items. Height 165 cm Width 99 cm
