Exquisite Painted Games Table One of the most sophisticated examples of colonial painted furniture to be uncovered in recent years is this superbly decorated chess table. The main background design is derived from a coach painting tradition brought to the colonies from Britain. The finish is further enhanced by the inclusion of the tiki motif inside the ace of spades. Examples of painted furniture are rare in New Zealand with a multitude of plainly painted, decorative finishes and grained like other timbers having long been discarded or stripped to reveal the plain timbers beneath. This table is both an extremely rare and very significant survivor. Only two other examples of this Auckland-made table are known to have existed: one is now in the Collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and the other was stripped of its paint by a dealer to make it 'saleable' in the 1990's.
