19th century, Qing Dynasty: Extra large painting of the God Cheng Huang dressed in a scholar's hat with wings on sides, red gown embroidered with crane (longevity) and dragon among clouds, holding his sword vertically upwards in both hands, long sideburns, moustache and goatee beard, benign countenance, surrounded by young male holding a plant, a warrior and a monster holding a banner with words: 'Qing Shen Chen Haung' (the God Chen Huang is present). Behind him and above clouds are two other Gods. An example of the brightly coloured images displayed on special occasions or during festivities, each city or village in China has its own Cheng Haung God to protect it. Based on real men of fame, when alive, when dead they send dreams to people to protect others from wrong doing so they can be stopped with enemy attacks. Chen Haung protects people from dying in the moats and on the walls. 260 x 100 cm. Stunning.
