A Very Rare Chevron Pendant NZ's oldest breast ornament jewellery returned from Australia. Pre-European Maori 14th century whalebone chevron pendant. Extremely rare, a few examples held in Museum's world wide. (It has been suggested they came from the Northland region). This one is near perfect. Has 11 legs (only 1 leg missing) and in good condition overall. The chevron pendant grew out of the simple imitation whale tooth form that was brought to New Zealand by the first Polynesian settlers. The profile has a fabulous open mouth 'manaia'. One side has traces of glue, possibly where it was stuck on board sometime in its life for display.
