Description:
Two Door Carvings with Lintel (Pare) The door carvings were carved at the Maori Arts and Crafts Centre in Rotorua c. 1960 under the supervision of the late Hone Taiapa, Obe, Master Carver, and are of very good quality, being carved in clean heart Totara from the Taupo district, with paua shell eyes from Taranaki. Note that the central figure of the Korupe is a female figure. The two architraves are of Taranaki design. The top of the heads depict Mt. Egmont (Mt. Taranaki). The serpentine part of the carvings represents the Wanganui River and is part of Maori mythology. Tongariro and Taranaki were seeking the favours of Pahanga, a small mountain at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Tongariro, the largest mountain attacked Taranaki, who fled to the west, creating the upper part of the Wanganui River. No Y number required as carved in the 1960s.
