The Kotahitanga Settlements Maori Parliamentary cabinet box. This cabinet was the original debating box for Maori speakers of the lower house. Composed of walnut marquetry, cross banded with central cupboard doors and inlaid with boxwood lines. Engraved with inscription/name Henare Tomoana (probably applied after cabinet was removed from service). Note Tomoana was a member of the Maori Parliament. Provenance: after removal from service box was gifted to Constance cherry. This was passed with other significant pieces from the cherry Family collection to Castrol Oil founder Charles Cheers Wakefield, Kent and subsequently Wakefield house, Sydney. Upon Wakefield's death in 1941, this and other items reverted to the collection of Castrol Oil, Birmingham. The current owner purchased this and subsequent three lots from John Nicholson Auctioneers, Surrey, England 2006
