Description:
A rare cocuswood side table, late 17th/18th century, the rectangular oyster cocuswood veneered top, above a frieze with a central slim drawer on turned legs and a shaped stretcher with spiral twist legs, 92 cm wide, 65 cm deep, 74 cm high. Cocuswood, sometimes called Jamaican ebony, was exported from Jamaica in large quantities from the 1660's onwards it was typically used, as in this lot, for oyster veneering, and with falling prices for basic commodities it had become a cheaper option for veneering. Adam Bowett suggests that cabinets made in cocuswood appearing later than 1680 are rarer due to the more common use of olivewood and walnut (Adam Bowett English furniture 1660 - 1714, from Charles II to Queen Anne, 2002, p. 54
