Description:
Piece of Wooden Flagstaff Cut Down by Hone Heke A remarkable find of great historical importance. Silver plaque mounted on the side reads 'Piece of Flagstaff/at/Russell, Bay of Islands/on which was English Flag cut down/by Hone Heke in 1845 and was the/cause of the New Zealand War' (also known as the Flagstaff Wars). From the collection of the Earl of Ranfurly, Governor General of Nz 1900 period. Provenance: Given to Dunbar Sloane Senior in the Uk to sell on behalf of the great granddaughter of the Earl of Ranfurly, (Lady Caroline Simmonds). Note - When Lady Caroline Simmonds emailed Dunbar Sloane Snr with her decision to sell, there was a remarkable coincidence. He told her that his Great Great Grandmother, Mary Robinson, believed to be the 2nd or 3rd white child born in Nz (1835 at Mechanics Bay, Auckland), married Dunbar Sloane, who arrived in Nz from Scotland aged 20, at the Presbyterian Church, Auckland in 1853. Mary Robinson's parents owned and ran the timber mill in Vulcan Lane (off Queen Street). They made the flagpole for Russell, Bay of Islands (called Kororareka in those days), and probably another one or two as Hone Heke chopped them down. The Vulcan Lane site, eventually became a hotel called the Queen's Ferry, or 'Hole in the Wall' and belonged to the Sloane family until it was sold to 'Nz Breweries' around 1970.
