Png New Ireland L'iniet (or Marawot) Magnificent chalk figure from New Ireland, very few of which remain today. Kuiap limestone chalk figures were commissioned from carvers in the Rossell Mountains. A carving was brought back secretly to the ritual house and kept with other figurines. It held the spirit of the deceased until funeral rights were over and the potentially troublesome spirit returned to the ancestors, it was then taken far away and broken or sold. Acquired by the vendor in the 1950s. Height 27 cm
