1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coup #233; Chassis No: 111026-22-004439, Engine Number: 116980-22-005894, Reg: XX-196. Mercedes-Benz has long been recognised as the maker of some of the highest quality cars available, combining style, performance and practicality with aplomb. In more recent times one of the most sought after of the productions cars they have made are the W111 Coupe and Cabrio series. Several engines were offered over the production life of these rare 2-door cars, with the ultimate being the 3.5 litre V8, introduced in 1969 for the final version. The engine produced ample power, giving smooth performance far in excess of the previous 6-cylinder versions. The supremely elegant bodywork was by Mercedes-Benz stylist Paul Braque and for the 3.5 models, gained a lower and wider bonnet and radiator grille as well as re-profiled front wings. While the changes updated the look of the car, they were subtle and it lost none of the attractive style of the earlier six cylinder cars. The pillarless coupe was well equipped, with power steering, electric windows, leather upholstery and polished woodwork featuring inside. As was usual in the era, great attention to detail and a high level of engineering excellence were hallmarks of these cars. Needless to say, they were very expensive - costing over $13,000 (when a Jaguar E-Type cost $8000) and available by special order only. The example offered here is believed to have had just four owners from new and been a Sydney car all its life. While the car has been re-painted it is largely original and would benefit from a re-trim. Used regularly by its current owner it would be a suitable car for both an enthusiasts of as a usable classic.
