Smith & Son Ltd, 9 Strand, London surmounted by an elaborate cresting of foliate scrolls over a pierced lattice with twin finials, the hood with canted front corners applied with substantial scrolls to a dentil carved throat moulding, the trunk with shaped glazed panel decorated with further foliate scrolls and ribbons, matching carved corner sections on a base with applied shaped shield on an ogee carved apron, the shaped gilt dial set to the arch with a rolling moon phase with outer arc for the moons age over subsidiaries for chime/silent and Whittington/Westminster tune selection, the silvered chapter ring with applied gilt Arabic numerals set on a very finely engraved gilt ground, the massive movement with thick plates united by six heavy turned pillars screwed to the rear, with deadbeat escapement striking the hours on a large tube and chiming the quarters on eight tubes and hammers, the mercury jar pendulum with engraved gilt stirrup top reading against an applied silvered beat scale 298 cm high
