Description:
Charles Nettleton, Alfred Hospital, circa 1874, albumen paper print laid down on printed card identifying the photographer and the subject; the image 12 x 18 cm; overall 19.5 x 24.5 cm., the movement for a second general public hospital in Melbourne was initiated in 1866 by James service and three doctors (S.D. Bird, T.M. Girdlestone and J. Blair). The foundation stone was laid by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, on 6th March 1869. The architect was Charles Webb. The original buildings comprised of the administrative block with a 'Whimsical tower' and the West pavilion containing the male wards.
