An iron tsuba, signed Syouami Sigenobu. Edo period, 18th-19th century. This piece was crafted by Shoami Shigenobu from Aizu in Mutsu Province. Aizu, a castle town of the Matsudaira clan with a domain worth 230,000 koku, was known alongside the Mori clan's Choshu domain for its significant production of sword guards. The Shoami school, especially prominent in Aizu, became well-known under the name 'Aizu Shoami.' Shigenobu's works often feature designs like this tsuba, with openwork clouds.
