A rare bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara. Liao Dynasty, (916-1125). The figure represents Avalokiteshvara in a meditative pose, seated in padmasana, with hands gently holding an alms bowl. The throne beneath features a distinct stepped cylindrical base, topped by an open lotus blossom with individually detailed, overlapping petals. Traces of the original gilt over lacquer are visible throughout. While the figure exhibits characteristics of the five Dynasties period, it is more likely from the Liao period, when emperors were devout Buddhists and religious Art flourished. Buddhist imagery from this era combined the bold Tang dynasty styles, favored by Northern nomadic peoples, with the refined elegance characteristic of song dynasty artistry.
