Description:
A rare white glazed foliate-rimmed vase. Northern Song-Jin Dynasty (AD 960-1234). The vase's ovoid body features a bow-string band encircling the shoulder, while the tall trumpet-shaped neck flares out to an undulating rim adorned with additional bow-string incisions. The entire piece rests on a high, spreading foot. It is coated with a creamy white glaze that extends into the mouth and onto the base. This exceptionally rare vase is attributed to the Northern Song period, evidenced by its precise craftsmanship, white body, and ivory-toned glaze. Without additional decoration, the vase's aesthetic appeal is drawn from its refined form, balanced proportions, and exquisite glaze color. Vases of this form are known as hua kou ping (vase with foliate mouth rim). This distinctive shape originated in the Tang dynasty and gained popularity across various kilns during the song dynasty. A comparable Ding bottle vase of similar shape and size was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong on 30 November 2017, lot 412. For a Cizhou example, see Tsugio Mikami's Sekai toji Zenshu 13 Liao Jin Yuan, Shogakukan, Tokyo, p. 243, no. 278. Similar vases also appear in Jun ware, such as one of comparable size but broader proportions, sold at Christie's New York on 17-18 September 2015, lot 2320. Provenance: Important private Collector, height 16.5 cm diameter 10 cm
