A grey stone stele of Vishnu, India, probably Pala period, 12th century, the four-armed standing figure in high relief, holding a gadha (mace) in his upper right hand, the lower in varadamudra with a tiny lotus in the centre of the palm, the upper left hand holidng a cakra(disc) and the lower left a conch, wearing a three-pronged tall crown topped by an amalaka, elaborate jewellery and a vanamala (floral garland) at his knees, with two female consorts Lakshmi and Sarasvarti holding a fly whisk and vina standing to either side, the arched backing carved with small avatars of Vishnnu either side of the kirttimukha at the apex, wood stand, 54 cm high (without tang), In the late Pala period Vishnu is the most popular Hindu deity depicted in sculpture and most commonly shown in this form.
