A large Japanese bronze vase by Kakutani Yosai, Meiji period (1868-1912), 1880s, ovoid with a short waisted neck and everted mouth, in a brown patina, the front with a scene applied in high relief with gilt and coloured details of a dramatic scene of a wooden ferry boat carrying passengers upon a swirling river including a Sarumawashi (monkey trainer) and his monkey, holding a Shakujo (ritual staff), a Bijin clutching an umbrella, gentleman holding a pipe, religious figure with his staff, and a night-watchman with 'Beware of Fire' bag attempting to steer against the current, signed --- ('Made by Yosai'), 64 cm high
