German 800 silver Mau 'Man in the Moon' pill box, late 19th century, stamped with post 1886 moon and crown standard mark, alongside French import mark of a swan within an oval cartouche, of squat cylindrical form, the cover superbly cast with a grumpy man in the moon, opening to a gilt wash interior, the sides in repousse c-scroll and foliate designs, the base similarly cast as the cover with a grumpy man in the moon, total weight 15.69gm, diameter 37 mm, includes period presentation box catalogue note: the origin of this pill box May relate to the German town of Menningen which speaks of a legend named 'Menningen Mau'. Noticing the moon shining brightly one evening, the townspeople called upon the local fisherman to fetch their nets and haul in the moon so that its light could perpetually shine whenever desired.
