A Sunderland rummer, English circa 1810, bucket bowl, bladed knop stem, and a conical, flat foot, engraved with Sunderland bridge, a ship, 'F.P.', Floral decoration, and in diamond point 'Sunderland Bridge over the river Wear'. Height 152 mm, Foot/Stem/Bowl 85/-/100 mm. Provenance: The original Wearmouth Bridge was designed by Thomas Paine and opened in 1796. In 1805 the bridge was repaired. It was a significant milestone in iron construction, being of a length and height and that would have been impossibly expensive in stone. The unusually high arch allowed masted ships to pass underneath - as shown in the engraving.
