An important early convict waistcoat, the back panel of fine cotton plain weave with remnant olive green twill worsted wool fabric detailing at seams and back collar, oil based stamps on back panel and oversewn patches, original stamp 'Bathurst Gaol' in a circle with the 'broad arrow' in the centre and the number '51' stamped above, two further patches sewn over this original number stamped '202' and '272', a further third patch has been sewn over these numbered panels stamped 'Berrima Gaol' in a circle with the broad arrow' in the centre, the original Bathurst Gaol stamp has been over stamped with a large number '2', the missing front panels have been reconstructed using closely matched twill weave worsted wool fabric emulating original quality and style, circa early 1830s As far as can be ascertained this convict waistcoat with a provenance that firmly dates it to the early to mid 1830's is the oldest item of New South Wales convict clothing known
