A Phemba maternity figure from the Yombe people of Congo. Carved wood sitting female figure cradling a young child. With glazed recessed eyes in black and kaolin pigments and her chest and back carved with the crossed hatched diamond shaped cicatrice that are emblematic of the real-life women she represents. It's commonly believed that Phemba are used to promote fertility in women. Height 34 cm
