Description:
An Indian presentation silver goblet with British Regimental provenance, in the Kutch style, circa 1879, richly decorated throughout and raised on a knopped stem, with sentiment engraved to the footrim, "PRESENTED TO THE OFFICERS 1st BATTLN 6th ROYAL REGT. BY LIEUT: IRWIN ON APPOINTMENT, 1879", 18.3 cm high, 460gms silver weight. Provenance: the Royal Warwickshire Regiment sale, 1960s, acquired by the vendor's father-in-law who served in India as a Colonel of the Regiment, thence by descent, NOTE, Herbert Edwards Irwin was a member of the British troops serving in India in the 1870s. In 1879 he was serving in Rookee with the 6th Regiment (Royal Warwickshire), 1st Battalion. This goblet, his gift to the officers, was on his appointment as Adjutant on September 1 1879. Irwin later served in the Soudan under Sir Herbert Kitchener and is mentioned in Kitchener's despatches.
