A bronze figure of the dancing Shiva Nataraj, South-India, 19th century, the four armed deity raised on an oval lotus base, his right leg standing on Apasmaru Purusha, the demon of ignorance, backed by open-mouthed makara, the left foot raised symbolic of liberation, and holding a damaru (drum) in his outstretched right hand representing the five rhythms of manifestation, and the ratna (flaming jewel) in the left outstretched hand, wearing elaborate jewellery and headdress, 89 cm high.
