A finely carved cinnabar lacquer box and cover, Ming Dynasty, 15th-16th century, carved in relief with a pair of birds reminiscent of phoenixes, soaring and plunging amidst peonies in full or partial bloom. The birds, with wings outstretched, are delicately incised with fine lines to depict their feathery bodies and heads. On the reverse side, a densely carved classical border adorned with plums and leaves, while the base is coated in a rich dark brown lacquer, 7.4 cm x 5.3 cm x 3.2 cm
