An exceptional carved Yaozhou petal-rim jar, Northern Song Dynasty ( 960-1127), the jar features a finely crafted bulbous form that tapers into a subtly constricted neck, which then gracefully expands into six realistically turned-out petal shapes. The surface of the jar is embellished with six patterns of peony blooms and vine tendrils, positioned beneath a strip of upright leaf-shaped decorations on the neck. The piece is enveloped in a shiny olive-green glaze that accumulates in the depressions, except for the base's ring, which exposes the unglazed ceramic material, 12.3 cm.) wide.
