A tooled leather clad despatch box belonging to W.G. Romaine, C.B., by Wickwar & Co., Poland Street, London, circa 1860, stamped 'W.G. Romaine, C.B'. to the chamfered edge of lid and also 'Admiralty', with brass carry handle, diamond escutcheon, leather lined and gilded stamp of maker's mark to inner rim, Wickwar & Co., Manufacturers to H.M. Stat'y. Office, 17.5 cm high, 39.5 cm wide, 27 cm deep, Note, William Govett Romaine (1815-93), barrister and government official, served as Deputy Judge-Advocate of the Army in the east at the time of the Crimean War, and in 1857 was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Admiralty where he served until 1869. The despatch box undoubtedly dates from this period
