Description:
A pair of male huia beaks, one with skull fragment. Originating to the 'King Country' region in the Western North Island, c.1800s. Male huia had a heavier, shorter and less curved beak than females. They used their bill to chisel rotting wood, for feeding purposes. Mounted on kauri wood block, with wall mount to reverse. Mounted, height 7 cm, width 20.5 cm, depth 2.5 cm, left beak, height 3 cm, width 7.5 cm, depth 2 cm, right beak, height 1 cm, width 4 cm, depth .5 cm Provenance: Private Collection, Aotearoa. The beaks have been in the vendor's family for 130 years.
