Description:
A pair of fine Derby porcelain still-life rectangular plaques, painted with fruit and flowers in the manner of Thomas Steele, English circa 1820, 25.5 cm by 21 cm. Provenance: Moghul Antiques ( Ned Roberts) Adealide South Australia 1980. Reference: Two important documentary plaques were sold Bonhams London 29 January 1975 and are discussed by John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain, p 275. Very little detail of Thomas Steele's life is known. He worked at Derby from around 1815, moving to Rockingham in the late 1820s and returning to Staffordshire where his name is mentioned in the Minton Wages Book of 17 March 1832. A single plaque was sold Bonhams London 8 December 2004 Lot 374 which was signed and dated 1838 when the artist was working freelance. ( Sold 3346 pounds)
