Description:
A Kerr & Binns Worcester porcelain enamel decorated exhibition chalice, dated 1862, the enamel decoration by Thomas Bott, Snr, the tapering cup-shaped body on a knopped stem and circular foot, the ground cobalt-glazed with foliate motifs in white 'Limoges Enamel' and gilt details throughout, the body decorated all round with figures of Apostles finely rendered in coloured enamels on a gilt ground within arched panels, the foot decorated in conforming manner with figures of winged cherubim within quatrefoils, signed by Bott underside with conjoined initials together with the printed red shield factory mark incorporating the date mark '62', 23.5 cm high. Exhibited: London international exhibition of Industry and Art, 1862. Literature: the Art Journal illustrated catalogue of the international exhibition 1862 (London, 1862), p. 257 (illustrated, within a group), J.B. Waring, Masterpieces of Industrial Art & sculpture at the international exhibition, 1862 (London, 1863), plate 141, with accompanying letterpress (originals of both of which accompany this lot). Other notes: Wendy cook, formerly of the Museum of Royal Worcester, previously identified Samuel Ranford as the gilder.. Condition: Generally good condition overall, very slight wear., inspection under Uv reveals possible small area of restoration to the garment of one of the figures of the saints
